This job description is established by the South Adams County Fire Protection District (“District”) to outline the basic requirements, duties, and responsibilities of the EMS Clinical Educator position, and is written to complement the District’s Member Handbook and Standard Operating Guidelines.

**This position holds a probationary status of 12 months from date of hire**

Position Summary:

The EMS Clinical Educator provides support to all aspects of the EMS program within the Fire Department. This position performs individually and/or as a member of a team and participates in activities in the following areas: providing all clinical education to members of the Fire Department, to include monthly continuing medical education, basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric life support, PHTLS, and other required courses. This position will also provide monthly company level education to all line members of the Fire Department.

Additionally, this position will assist the EMS Division with the performance a variety of staff functions including planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating all technical and administrative aspects of the EMS program.

Immediate Supervisor:

The EMS Educator reports directly to the EMS Division Captain.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are an overview of the primary duties and responsibilities of the EMS Educator and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

1.    Demonstrate knowledge of the District’s rules, policies and procedures, as they pertain to the Administrative and Operations Division specifically and the District generally, including but not limited to the rules, policies and procedures contained in the District’s Member Handbook, Payroll Procedures Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines.
2.    Administer and manage all aspects of the Department’s EMS clinical education program.

3.    Attends internal and external meetings as scheduled and assigned, provides information and advice regarding Department’s EMS activities.
4.    Assists in the coordination of EMS activities with other divisions of the Department and other departments and agencies.
5.    Provides information and assistance to facilitate delivery of quality EMS services.

6.    Teaches and/or coordinates continuing medical education classes for all personnel.

7.    Develops lesson plans. Evaluates, observes, and assists with medical education training and related activities. Ensures quality training is being accomplished.
8.    Evaluates the medical education, proficiency, and work performance of assigned personnel, through periodic testing.
9.    Assist the training division in the maintenance of EMS training and certification records for all personnel.

10.    Identifies any needed training for assigned personnel and coordinates the completion of training.

11.    Arranges for initial training of all EMT’s and facilitates the certification process for these personnel.

12.    Observes, follows, and enforces; established Department policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines; memos, standard operating guidelines, and past practice procedures related to EMS.

13.    Coordinates Department’s Field Instructor Program.

14.    Assist the EMS Division leadership with the planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating the technical and administrative aspects of the EMS program, to include, but not limited too, assisting with audits and critiquing medical reports completed by EMT’s for quality and adherence to appropriate protocols, durable medical equipment, medical supplies and other administrative needs as assigned.
15.    Delivers work products and services within the assigned work schedule which averages 40 hours per week and is generally performed Monday through Fridays between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Work shift may be extended, if necessary, to meet emergency operations requirements and scheduled training needs.

Minimum Qualifications and Certification Requirements:

1.    Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
2.    Must possess a minimum of an Associates degree in EMS or Nursing.

3.    Must be actively practicing paramedicine and/or nursing care in a critical care environment for at least three (3) years to present date.
4.    Possess and maintain (without interruption) a valid Colorado driver's license, and acceptable driving record.
5.    EMT-P certified or Licensed Registered Nurse through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians or by the State of Colorado.

6.    Possesses a Colorado Emergency Medical Services Instructor/Coordinator certificate or completion of course within 12 months of hire.

7.    Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

10.    Knowledge and understanding of the District’s rules, policies and procedures as they pertain to the Operations Division specifically and the District generally, including but not limited to the rules, policies and procedures contained in the District’s Member Handbook, Payroll Procedures Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines.
11.    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, routine correspondence, and memos, and ability to write basic reports and correspondence.
12.    Ability to effectively present information as needed to members of the organization.
13.    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
14.    Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the duties of the position.

Required Certifications:

•    NREMT – Paramedic
•    CO State Paramedic or RN License Certification
•    ICS 100, 200, 700, 800

Preferred requirements

•     FP-C, CC-P, CEN, CRFN, and/or BCEN
•    State of Colorado Primary EMS instructor (or within 1 year of hire date)
•    BLS (CPR) Provider/Instructor (or within 1 year of hire date)
•    ACLS Provider/Instructor (or within 1 year of hire date)
•    PALS Provider/Instructor (or within 1 year of hire date)
•    PHTLS Provider/Instructor (or within 1 year of hire date)

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

**This position requires work in a variety of locations and conditions**

1.    Must be able to lift, move and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds.

2.    This position requires standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, squatting, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, pinching, gripping digging, spraying, reaching over head, reaching away from body, and repetitive motion.

3.    Will be required to work in all weather conditions and in extreme temperatures.

4.    Work may result in exposure to contaminated environments, including but not limited to, hazardous materials, smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists and dusts, which may require the use of Personal Protection Equipment.

5.    This position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception and color vision.

6.    This position will involve frequent periods of high physical, mental and/or emotional stress.

7.    Must have good close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus quickly.
